Nobody wants to spend more time, money or effort on washing the car than necessary. There are a lot of supposed shortcuts and money saving tips floating around out there. Which ones really work – and which ones don’t?
What works…
Clay bars really do remove embedded dirt in the paint. It’s important to lubricate them, however to prevent scratching. A bath sponge makes an excellent car washing sponge – as long as it’s not exfoliating. Foaming bathroom cleaner is great for interior vinyl.
What doesn’t work…
Don’t use tooth paste to polish out scratches. It’s not abrasive enough and often contains bleaching agents. Baby diapers are not a good way to quickly dry your car – unless they are cloth. Plastic can scratch or smear the finish.
Finally, the most common misconception is that you can wash a car with dish soap. Sure, you can – but you’ll be removing the wax. Dish soap contains powerful degreasers, and they will try to remove your car’s finish. Many car shampoos, such as Sour Power made by Dodo Juice, contain small amounts of wax to fortify your finish. Yes – there is a difference.
